I would like to take a moment to sincerely thank former President Ranil Wickremesinghe for his tireless efforts over the past two years.
During an incredibly challenging period, when Sri Lanka faced severe economic turmoil, he stepped in and worked to stabilize the country, preventing further decline. His leadership during this crisis, although difficult, was critical in bringing the nation back from the brink.
When the country was leaderless amidst unprecedented turmoil, he took on the responsibility. Without his intervention, the political chaos could have resulted in mass violence and the potential destruction of many political families. His decisive actions during this period helped prevent Sri Lanka from descending into further chaos after the events of May 09.
In addition to his efforts in managing the economy, I must acknowledge his role in facilitating a smooth power transition, ensuring stability for the future of Sri Lanka. He guided the nation through its most challenging moments, providing essential resources like oil and fertilizer to prevent the country from sliding further into crisis.
While he was often criticized for protecting certain political figures, it is essential to recognize that his actions ensured the survival of many politicians and restored some degree of order. However, both he and the nation must reflect on who should take responsibility for the economic crisis in the first place so we can prevent such challenges in the future.
Ranil Wickremesinghe was supported by the Pohottuwa (Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna), and despite having only one seat in Parliament, he demonstrated strong leadership. His political experience brought Sri Lanka through one of its most challenging periods, and I take pride in knowing that Sri Lanka produced a leader capable of such maturity and resilience. It is no exaggeration to say that Ranil Wickremesinghe has become a symbol of political stability at a time when the country needed it most.
Regardless of the challenges or criticism, his legacy should reflect his tireless efforts to lead Sri Lanka through an extraordinarily difficult period, and for that, I am truly grateful.
Thank you, Mr. Wickremesinghe, for your service during these difficult times.
